While never impenetrable, the frame rate suffers noticeably, and sometimes proves the difference between thrilling success and devastating failure, given the game’s emphasis on quick reactions.

This is all to say that Phantom Abyss falls somewhat short on achieving the goal of offering a challenging parkour adventure in a roguelite package. The whip and phantom gameplay involving other players’ trial and error are unique, but its clunkiness, difficulty, and disparate progression are worth a pause.

Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of Phantom Abyss Gameplay death overwhelm them. The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. At one point, I was being chased down a narrow corridor by a flaming head Guardian who was trying to eat me. After falling through the cracks right by the doorway, I restarted at the other end of the corridor. Unfortunately, this meant that the Guardian lay between me and the next checkpoint.

But you won’t be dying alone. You’ll be able to see the specters of other players who have trod the same paths as you, giving you some insight into how you’ll be surviving the perilous predicament in which you’ve found yourself. But do take care, for when you meet your demise, that temple will be lost to you forever.

If you’re a fan of retro platformers, then this action-adventure game may still be worth checking out, but, unless you have a burning desire to play, it’s hard to fully recommend

Daily mode: The same temple is available to all players for 24 hours. Unlike other modes, players can retry this temple as many times as they like.
